Takahachi “Service Area”

UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE (1797-1858), Japan's great landscape artist, traveled the route from Edo to Kyoto in 1832, sketching the passing scenes of the 53 "stations" and their ephemeral world of pleasure, then publishing a set of wood-block prints known as ukiyo-e. Overshadowing the human disposition of travelers, porters, and courtesans, there is always a magnificent scenery of splendid landscapes.

THE TOKAIDO "Eastern Sea Road" is Japan's most famous highway, built in 1603, joins Kyoto with Edo (today's Tokyo). Spaced at convenient intervals along the road were stopping places, or "stations," where travelers could find stables, food, and a night's rest.
